Accessibility Statement

Sunshades Depot is committed to making our website usable by as many people as possible, including people with disabilities. This statement explains what we have done, what we know still needs work, and how to reach us if you run into a barrier.

Conformance status

We are working toward WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the standard most commonly applied to commercial websites in the United States. Where practical we also implement the additional Level AA criteria introduced in WCAG 2.2.

This website is currently partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. "Partially conformant" means that some parts of the content do not yet fully meet the standard. The specific gaps we are aware of are listed below.

What we have done

• Restored visible keyboard focus indicators throughout the site, so keyboard users can always see where they are.
• Corrected the accessibility semantics of the main navigation, so screen readers announce it as a list of links rather than an application menu.
• Added alternative text to product gallery images, banner images, and carousel slides, and accessible names to gallery and carousel controls.
• Corrected the semantics of expandable sections (product filters, checkout summary, mobile navigation) so screen readers announce them as buttons and report whether each section is open or closed.
• Gave product option controls proper labels, so screen readers announce what each one selects.
• Hidden duplicated carousel slides from screen readers, so the same banner is no longer announced twice.
• Increased the size of small interactive controls, including product options and filter checkboxes, to meet minimum target size guidance.
• Corrected text colours that did not meet the minimum contrast ratio.
• Added a display options panel (bottom of every page) that lets you adjust text size, text spacing, colour contrast, link underlines, and animation without needing browser add-ons. These settings are saved on your device.
• Verified that the full path from browsing to checkout — including the payment step — can be completed using a keyboard alone.
• Verified with a screen reader that the main navigation, product pages, add-to-cart confirmations, form validation errors, and the payment step are announced correctly.
• Verified that pages remain usable at 320 pixels wide (equivalent to 400% browser zoom) without horizontal scrolling.

Known limitations

We are aware of the following limitations:

• Image descriptions. Alternative text for product images is currently generated from the product name. This is usable but less descriptive than text written by a person. We are improving descriptions for our most-viewed products first.
• Third-party product content. Some enhanced product descriptions are supplied by external providers. We correct their accessibility issues where we can, but we do not control the source content.
• Third-party carousel control. One control in this content is smaller than the recommended minimum size.
• Screen reader coverage. Our testing has used VoiceOver on macOS. We have not yet tested with NVDA or JAWS on Windows, and some announcements may differ on those platforms.
• Payment card fields. Card entry fields are supplied by our payment provider and rendered inside their own frames. We have verified they can be completed with a keyboard and a screen reader, but their internal labelling is controlled by the provider, not by us.
• New content. Descriptions for newly added products and promotional images depend on staff entering them. We are building this into our publishing process, but recent additions may lag.

How we test

We evaluate this site using a combination of methods:

• Automated scanning with axe-core across all major page templates, re-run after every change
• Manual keyboard-only navigation through the complete purchase path, from browsing to the payment step
• Manual testing with the VoiceOver screen reader on Safari
• Reflow testing at 320 pixels wide

Automated tools detect roughly a third of accessibility problems, so we do not rely on them alone.
