We have lived in our home for 8 years and have never been able to enjoy our patio in the summer because of the sun. For gatherings and dinners we've had to place patio umbrellas everywhere and esthetically it looked bad and still failed to truly cool off the patio. I found these shades, and I am shocked. Instantly the patio felt cooler after installing just 1! My husband and I couldn't believe how well they're working. The only downfall is that when the wind is blowing they retract back if you don't secure the carabiner to the other end (picture). We are trying to think of ways to secure it without getting up and down on a ladder. Overall I am so happy with these. We live in OH so we're planning on taking them down in the winter but if you've thinking about them... don't hesitate!

All the DIY retractable shades I'd seen used electrical conduit or PVC pipe, carabiners or similar, and just looked meh. And it would have required 10-20+ hours of work and planning to sew the material and put all of that together for something clunky. On the professional side, there were shades that were $2000-$5000 - just for manual versions. The $5000 was even off-the-shelf which you just ordered enough pieces of to make the size you wanted. Ridiculous! Instead I bought two of these in beige to cover a 15ft x 16ft minimalist pergola . Their in-stock 7ftx16ft size was perfect (with brackets, it came out to 7ft and 1/4" wide). They were one of two sizes that were in stock and approx. half the price of the many available custom-sized versions (still an excellent value). Right now only the brown in 3ftx16ft is available - I'm glad I ordered when I did! Maybe since it's the end of the summer they won't be making any more for now. I certainly hope they offer this marvelous product to other folks! The hardware is spot-on: the metal pincer bars holding the cloth are very streamlined, the attachment brackets slide and are secured with set screws, brackets look very solid and mounting screws are the excellent self-drilling stainless (I think) type. The braided cable is nice and thick. Note: I hadn't trimmed the black pull cable by the time I took these pictures nor the braided cable which they provided at least 9 feet more than I needed for each shade - nice! Have no idea how they'll do in various weather (no rain since installation) but I absolutely love them! As an added bonus, they are at the same level as the top of some of my windows, and open, they reflect a warm golden glow into my house as if they were another subtle, dispersed light fixture (which doesn't really exist). Highly recommend and SO happy I found these! Please offer them again to others!Update 5/25/20: still holding up great almost 10 months later, in the Texas sun, though 95% of the time they are pulled back so my plants get sun and since our trees or house shade that area most of the time. Recently I starting using a solid metal hook I had lying around to open/close the shades. A similar kind can be had by buying a Lynk Double Hang Closet Rod organizer or similar and removing the wood bar. The hook on the ones that came with would pull out of the pole (secured by a drywall anchor), a minor annoyance. But I yank with confidence now. I highly recommend these and would buy them again!
