Foldable Patio Shades: Folding, Roller and Retractable Options Compared

← Back to Guides

Some patios start the day pleasant and end it unbearable. The sun swings round, the table you set up at breakfast is in full glare by mid-afternoon, and the only way to stay outside is to drag the chairs somewhere else. Shade that moves with the day solves that, and the best versions can be folded, rolled or pulled back when you want the sky again. This guide compares the ones we sell and helps you decide which suits your patio.

In short. Folding and roller shades answer low sun from the side. Retractable canopies and pergola covers answer high sun from above. Work out which one your patio needs, measure the actual opening, and make sure you have something solid to fasten to. Plan to take any of them down in strong wind.

Three questions before you shop

Top view of a patio next to a house with a seating group and three sun directions marked for morning, afternoon and evening
Sit out at three different times and note where the sun reaches your seat.
  1. Where does the sun reach you, and when? High sun around lunchtime asks for something overhead. Low sun in the early or late hours asks for something vertical, hung where the light comes in. Many patios have both.
  2. What can you fasten to? A pergola beam, a post, a house wall that is part of the structure. Gutters, fence panels and decorative railings are not reliable anchors. If you have nothing solid, say so now, because it narrows the choice more than anything else.
  3. How often will you open and close it? Every day, seasonally, or only when guests come? Daily use favours a shade that folds or slides in seconds. Seasonal use is happy with something you tie up and take down.

Add wind to the list. A patio squeezed between buildings, beside a pool or on a slope gets gusts that a light fabric will not enjoy. That does not rule shade out, but it does mean choosing one you can fasten at several points and being ready to take it down.

The options, side by side

Five products on our site fit this topic. The letters are used again in the table, diagrams and photos below. Only A to C fold, roll or slide away. D and E hold their position while you use them and come down when you choose.

Folding shades: four settings

Four panels side by side showing a folding shade lowered fully, three quarters, half and one quarter of the way, with the covered area increasing
The listing describes four set positions: full, three quarters, half and a quarter.

The folding shade (A) is the one to look at when you want to change the coverage through the day. Its listing describes a 220 GSM polyethylene fabric with weighted rods, and a folding design that uses a pole to change the shaded area, which the listing says keeps children away from the drawstring. The rods come in sections, and the carton is much smaller than the shade itself. The listing states a 3-year limited warranty under normal weather and use.

Retractable canopies: what comes in the box

A retractable canopy with numbered parts below it: pad eyes, screws, turnbuckle, duplex wire clip, wire cable, control tape, hangers, pull rope and a pole
The numbered parts from the product image. The numbers match the table below.
No.PartWhat it does
1Pad eye (4)Screws to the wall or frame at each end and gives the cable something to hook to.
2Screw (16)Fixes the pad eyes.
3Turnbuckle (1)Tightens the cable. Turn it to take up slack.
4Duplex wire clip (1)Locks the cable loop.
5Wire cable (1)The track the canopy hangs and slides on.
6Control tape (1)Sets the spacing between the sections, which limits how far the fabric drapes.
7Hanger (14 or 18)Connects the fabric to the cable. The photo gives 14 for a 12 ft length and 18 for a 16 ft length.
8Pull rope (1)Draws the canopy open or closed.
9Pole (1)A hooked pole for reaching the rope.

The listing says the frame is not included, so you need a pergola, gazebo or two opposing walls to mount to. The pad eyes and turnbuckle are the same kinds of fitting we describe in the shade sail hardware guide, which is worth a look if you are unsure how they work.

Standard sizes are 3, 4 or 7 ft wide and 4 to 40 ft long, and the listings say custom sizes are available. One of our retractable lines, the TANG canopy, explains that the listed length already includes the drape between sections.

Roller shades and pergola covers

Roller shades (B)

A roller shade box with its parts laid out: tie downs, section poles, rope holder, screws, clips and eye bolts
The roller shade ships folded, with the poles in sections.

The roller shade is a simpler design than the folding shade: you raise it as you would a blind. The listing says you assemble it yourself, that the box is smaller than the finished size, and that the fabric is washable. Like the folding shade, it comes in widths from 4 to 8 ft and heights from 5 to 15 ft. The listing states a 3-year limited warranty under normal weather and use.

Pergola covers (D)

A pergola cover is a flat panel, not a moving one. Two sides have rod pockets with weighted rods, and the other two have grommets every 2 ft. The TANG listing adds a detail that is easy to miss: in the listed size, the first number is the side with the rod pockets. So an 8 ft x 12 ft cover has its rods on the 8 ft sides and its grommets on the 12 ft sides. Measure your frame with that in mind.

Four numbers to write down

A front view of an opening with width W, drop D and the free space under the hem, next to a measuring card listing width, drop, mount type and clearance
W, D, M and C: write all four down before you order.
  • W, the width at the line where the shade will be mounted. Check it in two spots, as posts and beams are rarely perfectly square.
  • D, the drop from the mounting line to where you want the shade to end.
  • M, the mount. Beam, wall or post? Is it part of the structure?
  • C, the clearance. Do chairs, a railing, a light fixture or a door swing get in the way, now or when the shade is open?

Layering overhead and side shade

Side view of a patio with an overhead shade for high sun and a side shade on the right for low sun
Layer 1 covers the high sun and layer 2 covers the low sun.

When the heat arrives from two directions, the usual answer is two modest pieces rather than one large one. A retractable canopy (C) or pergola cover (D) over the seating, plus a folding or roller shade (A or B) on the side that gets the afternoon sun, is easier to fasten and easier to manage than a single oversized cover that closes the whole patio in.

Fabric and weather

The listings give these materials and weights.

ProductWhat the listing says
A Folding shades220 GSM polyethylene
B Roller shades220 GSM polyethylene
C Retractable canopies, permeablePolyethylene: 165 GSM (TANG) or 220 GSM (Bynbbur), depending on the product
C Retractable canopies, waterproofPolyester: 240 GSM (TANG) or 220 GSM (Bynbbur), depending on the product
D Pergola coversPermeable: 180 GSM polyethylene. Waterproof: 260 GSM polyester in most listings
E Shade sailsSee the permeable and waterproof pages

Open-weave fabric lets air and some rain through, which suits a hot, still patio. A waterproof fabric gives you cover from showers but holds more wind and needs to drain. Hang it on a slope so water runs off instead of pooling, and never let a flat panel sag with water in it.

For colour, our folding and roller shades come in brown, gray or beige. Darker shades cut glare and make a space feel enclosed. Lighter shades keep it bright.

The take-down rule

We do not publish a wind rating for these products, so the rule is simple: when strong wind or a storm is forecast, or when you will be away, take the shade down. Folding and unhooking take minutes. Replacing a damaged shade, cable or anchor takes much longer.

  • Fasten to structure: a beam, post or solid wall. On a deck, anchor into a structural member and keep water from sitting under the fixing.
  • Use every fastening point and tie-down supplied. Weighted rods help hold fabric down but do not make a shade storm-proof.
  • Keep fabric away from grills, fire pits, heaters and chimneys, and clear of power lines.
  • Remember that no shade is a substitute for an engineered, permanent roof.

Storing it, and the seasonal check

Measure your storage space first: the folded size can matter as much as the coverage. Brush off leaves and grit, check the seams, ties and clips, and let the fabric dry fully before it goes away for the winter. At the start of the next season, open it once and look for tears and worn fasteners before you rely on it.

Is a folding shade the same as a roller shade?

No. A folding shade (A) is set to a quarter, half, three-quarter or full position. A roller shade (B) rolls up like a blind. Both hang vertically and come in the same size range.

Are the retractable canopies waterproof?

There is a permeable version and a waterproof version. Choose the permeable fabric if you want air and a little rain to pass through, and the waterproof one if you want shelter from showers.

Can I leave a shade up all winter?

We do not give a rating for snow, wind or storm loads. The safe course is to take the shade down, dry it and store it when severe weather is expected.

Do you sell the pergola frame?

No, we do not sell pergola frames. The retractable canopy listing says the frame is not included, so you need an existing pergola, gazebo or two opposing walls.

Can I order a size that is not listed?

The retractable canopy and pergola cover listings say custom sizes are available. Contact us before you order.
